Glee Cast: The Voice of the People

7 Jun

Wow. There is no witty way to say this: we had front row seats to the Glee concert at Mohegan Sun.

Being the dedicated viewers that we are, we assumed that the only way to attract the attention of the cast on stage was to dress as they do on the show. So, standing in front of our respective closets we waited for outfit revelations that would make us look like residents of Lima, Ohio. Not interesting, but we both ended up wearing patterned shirts.  Bear with us, we’re trying to create a build up for the main event.

Alyssa speaking to the people in her patterned shirt.

Anyways, we had a generally luxurious one-night stay at Mohegan Sun. Thoughts on the second largest casino in the United States:

  • Picturesque views of the Reservation and the Thames River
  • Great vanity kits in the bathroom (was in desperate need of a new shower cap)
  • Ben and Jerry’s, Starbucks and Johnny Rocket’s. Can’t go hungry at Mohegan Sun.

  • No E! entertainment channel, AND we couldn’t find a channel guide. We had to settle on Dr. Oz, where an audience member won a year’s supply of chopped liver. (Stay updated for a future blog post on Dr. Oz!!)
  • Must be 21 to gamble. We were hoping to see the central limit theorem in action on the roulette wheel. Sorry Larry Knop/Zachariah Dietz

Did we mention we were in the front row? Shout out to Danielle Feder for the seats, and Alex Sacco for being there. Woo!

Harry Shum Jr.’s/Mike Chang’s dance troupe, Legions of Extraordinary Dancers (LXD) was the opening act. We weren’t really into it, but one of the dancers looked like Bruno Mars and we spotted Harry Shum Jr. taking pictures from the side of the stage, so that kept us amused for the duration of their performance.

We won’t provide a play by play of the entire concert because we blacked out from screaming too much, but here are some standout moments.

  • Opening number: “Don’t Stop Believing.” Definitely a crowd pleaser. Every member of the cast wore red polos with white nylon vests for this number. Still confused as to who thought this was an acceptable color scheme.
  • Tina and Mercedes did their rendition of “Dog Days Are Over.” Great voices and dance moves. Tina’s one time to shine, but girl is lacking the stage presence.
  • Brittany S. Pierce, played by Heather Morris, performed “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Heather Morris has a BANGING body. According to Women’s Health magazine, she tried the cave man diet, which consists of grazing all day on fruits and nuts and binging on meat at night. Certain members of the Hamilton community, namely Alyssa and Lizzy Huebner, tried this and did not find it to be a sustainable diet. Anyway, props to Heather Morris for being in every single number, as a back up dancer or just a member of the Glee club. Star status: she is GOING places.
  • Rachel Berry/Lea Michele beasted Katy Perry’s “Firework” with her Mariah Carey hand motions. We noticed that Lea Michele took a back seat role to Heather Morris and other female cast members. We speculate that the producers are trying to save her voice for another engagement. Rude for all of us show tunes enthusiasts who were hoping to hear some songs from Funny Girl or Les Miserables.
  • During “Born This Way” male model back up dancers* shot the shirts seen in the Lady Gaga tribute episode out of a t-shirt gun. Both Alyssa and Dfay caught shirts; Alyssa’s says “no weave” while Danielle’s more appropriately states “likes boys.” Watch out Hunter Reed!

*Note on the male models: What? We should’ve known they were  bad news from their first appearance in the audience as male cheerleaders.

 Comments on key cast members:

  • Rachel Berry/Lea Michele: Saw blue tattoos on her right wrist and top of her foot. Didn’t peg her for an inked kind of gal.
  • Puck/Mark Salling: Wow. He and Alyssa basically had a relationship in the span of the concert, and it escalated pretty quickly. After holding her hand for at least a minute during “Somebody to Love,” he blew her a kiss while walking away. Jealous onlookers chalked the connection up to their shared Jewish heritage.
  • Mike Chang/Harry Shum Jr: Mouthed “I love you” to Elaheh. But it’s true what they say about his singing voice—he doesn’t have one. But really… he didn’t hold a microphone once during the entire concert.
  • Finn/Corey Monteith- Both Elaheh and Alyssa shared a laugh with him. Also, he loves life. He couldn’t stop smiling to himself.
  • Blaine/Darren Criss: Short and had weird shoes. However, he deserves a slow clap for enthusiastically finishing “Raise Your Glass” with a broken microphone and not doing an awkward jig à la Ashlee Simpson.
  • Quinn/ Dianna Agron: Pretty face, edgy haircut but not much else happening for her. No stage presence, and sorry but we’re judging her for wearing jeggings. So 2009.
  • Kurt/Chris Colfer: Definitely a performer, but he wasn’t really into the fans. He avoided eye contact with us, which was pretty hard to do given our enthusiastic screams from the front row.

Blaine's shoes = love child of Clarks and Dr. Martens

Woah. He is in our FACE!

Notes on stage chemistry:

  • Spotted: Mike Chang and Heather Morris tickling each other’s stomachs in what appeared to be an unchoreographed move. Tour bus hookups? We think so.
  • Rachel and Finn: Young love, so innocent. They don’t know what they’re in for.

Concluding thought: Two women behind us asked for a handshake at the end of the concert because we held the Glee boys’ hands (transitive property?). Direct quote: “you guys are the most enthusiastic fans here.” We’re proud but not surprised.

Alyssa lays her outfit out for the next day.

Woo!! Daily Picks!!

  • Song: Picture by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. So much raw emotion.
  • Movie: Evita. “A new Argentina, the voice of the people!”
  • Summer Reading: Summer is a great time to revisit old classics like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. Did Bee go to soccer camp in the first or second book? Get back to us on that.
  • TV Show: The Real World Las Vegas will satisfy us until the Gauntlet comes back on.

Next post: Is it possible to have ice cream for every meal? Wait and find out next week!

Also look for us at the ABC studios auditioning for a TV show previously hosted by Regis Philbin!

Ok WOW i’m sitting in my single in babbs and dying. Saaaaaaach a great post and you tow truly did this concert justice. I wish more than, well probably anything, that i could have been there. But I did enjoy the blow by blow text messages. (Let me know if you want those in another comment – I feel they truly capture the heat of the moments throughout your time there).

I have a few answers to your questions:

    1. Lea Michelle has SEVEN tattoos. I learned this from “Ten things you didn’t know about Lea Michelle” which is under “TV Clips” on Hulu. I tend to browse these when I should be studying for finals. (My big questions now is…do they cover these up for the show?? There’s NO WAY Rachel has tats.)

    2. Bee actually attended soccer camp in the first and THIRD books of the sisterhood series. The first time she was a camper “just looking for love” and the second time (third book) she came back to be a counselor. In the second book Bee goes on an emotional roller coaster about her hidden past and dealing with the untimely death of her mom. And she’s pretty messed up about losing her virginity to the hot soccer coach from the first book..the girl just was NOT emotionally stable. (PS this series is saaaaaach a good summer read and now i’m craving to read them all again).
